Time Warp from the 60s

by Jan-Erik Holmberg

"The bite-sized songs are multifaceted, both rhythmically and concerning the chord changes, still without losing their charming easy-going feel."

Jukka Eskola Soul Trio has a full plate of the soul jazz and bossa nova of the 60s – the terpsichorean trends that, in a compact format, often included The Hammond Organ.

The band, with Eskola on trumpet, Mikko Helevä at the organ, and Teppo Mäkynen on drums released its debut album two years ago.

On their sophomore effort, the rhythms are tilted more towards the Latin bit of jazz. The bite-sized songs are multifaceted, both rhythmically and concerning the chord changes, still without losing their charming easy-going feel. Mäkynens overdubbed vibes adds to the classic feel, while some sparingly use of effects turns the clock forward, resulting in a time warp.

All the tunes, save Gary McFarland’s romping Hanky Panky, are written by the group. As expected from these central players, their execution is top-notch.
