Documentary series on contemporary Finnish composers

by FMQ

The Society of Finnish Composers has published a 13-part documentary series on Finnish composers. All the documentaries are available on Vimeo.

In 2015, the Society of Finnish Composers decided as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations to commission documentary films on 10 to 15 composers. British journalist Andrew Mellor, who currently resides in Denmark and is a regular contributor to Gramophone magazine and FMQ, was invited to author the films.

Mellor was given a free hand and eventually selected 13 composers. The director and producer is Raimo Uunila, and the assistant producer is Lauri Danska. For more on the project and its genesis, see Mellor's column in FMQ.

All the documentaries in the series Composing out loud are now available on Vimeo. Our first three examples from the series feature Minna Leinonen, Outi Tarkiainen  and Olli Virtaperko.

Other composers in the series are Sebastian Dumitrescu, Perttu Haapanen, Anna Huuskonen, Sid Hille, Juho Kangas, Magnus Lindberg, Seppo Pohjola, Osmo Tapio Räihälä, Lotta Wennäkoski, and Aki Yli-salomäki.
