Intimate intertwining

by Tove Djupsjöbacka

"Playing together for all these years has made these ladies a stunning couple – you can almost see their hands intertwining. The rhythm is incredibly tight with all its stunning syncopation and swinging backbeats."

Milla Viljamaa and Johanna Juhola have worked hard to create a totally new take on the tango tradition, combining elements from Finland and Argentina. Starting as a duo, they have collaborated in ensembles such as Las Chicas del Tango and Johanna Juhola Reaktori.

Now they are back with a new duo recording, which feels like returning to their roots, to the intimate chamber music combo. Additional synthesisers and effects occasionally join Viljamaa’s piano and Juhola’s accordion. Playing together for all these years has made these ladies a stunning couple – you can almost see their hands intertwining. The rhythm is incredibly tight with all its stunning syncopation and swinging backbeats.

The general feeling on the record is quite playful and optimistic, still not forgetting more dramatic spices. I feel some Scandinavian folk among the influences, and the opening track reminds me of some 1980s heavy metal!

The music is coupled with a diary, but I personally preferred listening to the music before reading. It is very visual; you can almost see skylines and sunsets while listening.
