Twenty years on

by Jan-Erik Holmberg

"Rather than thinking through choruses, the Joona Toivanen Trio approaches their works through variations and development, with intense focus on dynamics, colors, and sound quality."

Pianist Joona Toivanen’s long-standing trio with his brother Tapani Toivanen (bass) and Olavi Louhivuori (drums) released their first album some 18 years ago. Their new recording XX marks the 20th anniversary of their trio collaboration.

Compared to November (2014), the trio’s sixth recording is a step towards abstraction. Less can become more when traditional structures with straightforward harmonies and solo playing are abandoned to a degree. Rather than thinking through choruses, the trio approaches their works through variations and development, with intense focus on dynamics, colors, and sound quality.

The compositions, penned individually by all three musicians, cover a broad range of expression and styles. All instruments are featured in both leading and supporting roles, giving the music an animated feel.
